Drexel University conducted studies around highlighting dyslexic strengths. He notices things that no one else does. I can recall a moment when he was four years old and we were walking to our car after school. I mistakenly tried to open another car door that I thought was ours same make, model, and year. I was dumbfounded at his awareness and questioned him. At the time, I had no idea of his giftedness, however, as time went on, I have been often amazed by his astute observational skills, one of many gifts he possesses.
Below are age related checklists. This particular child detested writing, so I scribed for her as she shared with me what to write. Big picture thinker This strength can make it easier to spot patterns and see trends in data.
People with dyslexia have the ability to see how things connect to form complex systems, and to identify similarities among multiple things. Such strengths are likely to be of particular significance for fields like science and mathematics, where pictures are key. This can be a very strong skill. Narrative reasoning Narrative reasoning uses memory of experiences episodic memory. Dyslexic individuals have a greater ability to learn through experiences and recall information with more efficiency, whether they have actually experienced or simply imagined these experiences.
Simplifying: understanding, taking apart or simplifying complex ideas or concepts. Analysing: using logic to decide on strength of an argument or where the truth lies. Deciding: interpreting patterns; situations to predict future events; make decisions.
These thread-like axons in our brain allow neural impulses to travel to connect to neurons elsewhere. This profile means there are fewer folds in the brain, more space in the white matter area within the fold, more long-range connections and more connections between the two hemispheres.
Professor Casanova did not find this affected one particular region of the brain per se — it might be presumed it stems from the phonic region, for example, that helps with reading fluency and comprehension — just the make-up of the overall structure. Similar to how humans have different ranges of hand shapes and sizes, and finger lengths, that may make some people more suited for certain types of work than others, for example, fine needlework compared to heavy lifting. This has been used to explain why people with dyslexia might have a tendency to excel at conceptual or big-picture thinking, as opposed to granular details or rote memory.
Signs of dyslexia usually become apparent when a child starts school and begins to focus more on reading and writing than in earlier years. People with dyslexia may confuse the order of letters in words and struggle to understand information when written down. Traditional educational benchmarking in an academic setting works to the disadvantage of dyslexics, rather than embracing the advantages of their way of thinking.
Dyslexics are also overrepresented in intelligence operations, with those on the GCHQ apprenticeship scheme up to four times more likely than average to be dyslexic. This is because many dyslexic strengths — advanced reasoning, pattern spotting, lateral thinking and data analysis — are critical in counter-terrorism. This talent is invaluable and enables us to quickly identify causes of problems and get systems back up and running promptly.
We have taken many steps to help people like him realise their full potential as our dyslexic and neuro-diverse colleagues really are critical for GCHQ. Most people in GCHQ have come across dyslexia so you can really bring yourself to work here. There are similar dyslexia success stories across many professions — from scientists to architects, writers to chefs.
In art, Pablo Picasso created Cubism by painting things as he saw them, often out of order, backwards or upside down, while Tracey Emin has incorporated incorrect spelling into her work. Dyslexia-friendly books with cream pages and clearer text released for adults with reading problems.
These are things dyslexics thrive in and I wish teachers were aware of the yin and the yang with dyslexia. Log In.
