Types of sailing boats Under the Marine Safety Regulations Vic , sailing boats are defined in two categories: Off-the-beach sailing yacht means an unballasted open yacht; including a centreboard dinghy, skiff and multihull yacht excluding cabin boat, fixed keel vessel, kiteboard , sailboard or stand-up paddle board Yacht means a vessel that is designed to be propelled by wind power, or a combination of wind and engine power; including a monohull yacht, trailerable yacht, and multihull yacht — that is ballasted or has a cabin or a fixed keel excluding off-the-beach sailing yacht.
Licensing and registration The Marine Safety Act Vic requires that any yacht or "trailer sailer" fitted with an engine capable of being used for propulsion in Victorian waters must be registered and in a seaworthy condition.

Lifejackets The lifejackets you are required to carry and wear depend on the size of your vessel, the waterway you are operating on and any conditions of heightened risk. Other safety equipment In addition to wearing an approved lifejacket as required, operators of sailing boats must also carry at least the minimum safety equipment for the waterway and conditions they are operating in.
Safe operation Victorian laws require that vessels are operated in a safe condition and manner, and according to the conditions of registration. Day cruisers: Although any sailboat can be cruised for a day, day cruisers are often boats shorter than 30 feet that are designed to be sailed for an afternoon.
Sailing cruisers: These sailboats can be monohulls or multihulls and are designed to cruise for weekends or longer. They usually have a berth bed , a head toilet and a galley kitchen.
They can be sloop, cutter, ketch, yawl or schooner-rigged and vary in length from feet. Larger sailboats tend to fall into the crewed superyacht category. Racing sailboats: Most offshore racers are larger boats crewed by multiple individuals while smaller racers can be single or double-handed.
Racing boats are usually built lighter, have fin keels and laminate performance sails. Some people will argue that these boats are a compromise for owners who want to primarily cruise but also race. These sailboats may rely on the engine to sail in light wind conditions, especially due to their excessive weight. They may be built of wood and have classic yawl rigs.
